Junior A football v Volunteers

The mighty Junior A footballers kept their 100% away record over the last two seasons with a 1-08 to 0-08 point victory over the Volunteers in Pairc Charman this evening. Management received a boost midweek with the news that Daire Turner was not available. Nonetheless we had 17 lads on the day with the return of Stephen Murphy for his first game since the 2016 Junior B county final proving to be a big boost.

The game started slowly and got gradually slower, with the heavy pitch not suiting our dynamic running game.

Two nice points from Rob Breen were divided by a rasper of a shot from Micheal Gahan to leave us 1-02 to 0-01 ahead. The Vols responded with a few points of their own until Mark Walsh pointed shortly before half time to leave the score 1-03 to 0-04 in our favour.

At half time Barry Murphy started a game of keepie-uppies which meant he got more touches of the ball during the interval than he did during the game itself. Further good news came at half time with the removal of Denis Walsh.

The second half started well and we managed to have most of the possession. Robbie Donnelly got our first two points of the second half, while Stephen Murphy and Pauric Walshe were very good under the high ball. Some woeful shooting from the usually accurate Rob Breen and the usually inaccurate John Murphy meant that our dominance didn’t show on the scoreboard, and the Vols got a couple of points to keep them in the game. We finished much the stronger with Pauric Walshe and Mark Walsh getting our last 3 points between them to see us to victory.

Team was:

Colin Hawkins,Pauric Walshe, Barry Murphy, James Donohoe, Lee McHale, Brian O’Loughlin, James Gahan, Mark Walsh, Sean McCabe, Stephen Murphy, Robbie Donnelly, John Murphy, Denis Walsh, Rob Breen, Micheal Gahan. Sub’s: Sean O’Leary for Denis Walsh, Peter Mernagh for Rob Breen, Rob Breen for Brian O’Loughlin.

Scores: Micheal Gahan 1-00, Robbie Donnelly 0-02, Rob Breen 0-02, Mark Walsh 0-02, Pauric Walshe 0-02.

Junior Football Quarter Final

Well done to the junior football team who beat Blackwater on Saturday to qualify for the semi final where we will face Cushinstown. The game started slowly for us and despite getting back into the game too many wides were the problem as we went in at half time 0-05 to 0-03 behind. We managed to close the gap in the second half but couldn’t quite manage to draw level despite having most of the play. We were 0-07 to 0-06 behind going into injury time when a long kick from Ray O Brien travelled over the goalkeepers head and into the net to put us two points ahead. Moments later another long ball found Chris Daly in space where he managed to get our second goal. We found the net for a third time a minute later but it was ruled out for a foul earlier in play. Final Score 2-06 to 0-07.

Field Evening

We will be hosting our annual field evening in the Monageer Parish Field (Beside Parish Hall) on this Sunday 5th of June, after the Patron at 6.30 pm in Monageer. There will be all the usual games/events such as bottle stalls, cake sales, golf, horseshoes, guess the weight of a lamb, hurling target shooting, and many others during the course of the evening.

We would like to invite all in the community and those who have come from further afield to come along and join in the fun, in what promises to be glorious weather conditions.

Also if anyone has anything they would like to donate as a prize for the raffle or for one of the competitions they would be greatly appreciated, or if you would like to donate cakes/buns for the cake sale they would be very welcome also.  Any of the above can be dropped off to the hall on sunday morning between 11am and 1pm, or they can be brought along in the evening.

Please come along and have an enjoyable evening out in the sun.

Adult League Updates

The Junior Footballers were the first adult team to be back in action this season. Unfortunately they lost out heavily to Tara Rocks in the league first round. The second round against the Starlights was a much better display but lost out narrowly by conceding some sloppy late goals.

The intermediate hurlers had a mixed start to their campaign in the higher grade. In the first round of the league we lost out to craanford by 5 points, but in the second round comfortably beat oulart on a scoreline of 5-17 to 4-12 despite conceding three late goals.

The junior hurlers have lost both league games so far despite playing well for many stages in the games. Goals again were the problem on both occasions as we lost out to oulart and buffers alley respectively.

The Junior B Hurlers have been on the losing side of two very tight games both against second teams of Blackwater and Askamore.

Unfortunately overall not a great start to the league campaign but lets hope for good improvement over the next few weeks in the build up to the championship
